SYNOPSIS

For seven years, award-winning Chinese-American filmmaker Nanfu Wang followed Rosa Maria Paya, daughter of the five time Nobel Peace Prize nominated activist, Oswaldo Paya, in Rosa’s fight for democracy. Drawing parallels to Nanfu’s own personal experiences in China, Night Is Not Eternal captures the human moments behind the scenes, the complexities of exile and small acts of defiance, to create a narrative without geographical boundaries, exploring the universal struggle for freedom.

PRESS

“Equally remarkable is what Wang has pulled off with this film. It’s the rare truly nuanced political documentary that is likely to challenge every viewer’s perspective — not because it tries to see all sides of an issue and leaves the viewer suspended in confusion, but because its point of view feels radically outside of convention, beholden to no one.”
– New York Times

“One of the best documentaries of 2024.”
– Polygon

“It’s hard to imagine a documentary feeling more timely.”
– Alliance of Women Film Journalists

“HBO’s great new documentary follows a Cuban pro-democracy activist who allied herself with the aspiring strongman.”
