A feature length documentary that tells the exuberant and moving story of Sonia Bazanta, known to the world as the singer Toto La Momposina, the godmother of world music.
Beginning in 2010, filmmakers Donald Roman Lopez and Rene Veilleux follow the legendary Colombian vocalist across Europe, into Mexico and home to Colombia. Beginning with her first major European tour in years, the film uses Toto’s musical performances as a way to retrace pivotal moments throughout her life – displaced by civil war as a child, finding refuge in her family’s musical traditions as a teenager, busking in the Paris metro and becoming the renowned world artist she is today.
At heart is a broader look at the complex issue of identity.
